Fourteen locations in Laval have been identified as spots visited by recent measles cases, including Carrefour Laval.
As of Wednesday, January 8, over five cases of measles had been reported in Quebec since the outbreak began in December 2024.
On Sunday, January 12, the province confirmed an 11th case, involving a person who visited Carrefour Laval during their contagious period, potentially exposing thousands to the disease.

“Given the small number of cases, it is not possible to disclose the exact number of cases by city or administrative region for privacy reasons,” said Marie-Christine Patry, a communications officer at the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

This marks the second measles outbreak in 2024.

Affected Locations

As of Monday, January 13, at 11:30 AM, the following places and times are potential exposure sites in Laval:

• Polestar Dealership (4600 Robert-Bourassa Blvd.):
  December 19, 2024, from 3 PM to 6:30 PM; December 27, 2024, from noon to 11 PM; December 30, 2024, from 9 AM to 9 PM; December 31, 2024, from 7:40 AM to 2:45 PM; and January 3, 2025, from 7:40 AM to 2 PM.
• Imagix – Radiology Chomedey (610 Curé-Labelle Blvd.):
  December 22, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
• Volvo Laval Dealership (4560 Robert-Bourassa Blvd.):
  December 27, 2024, from noon to 11 PM; December 30, 2024, from 9 AM to 9 PM; and December 31, 2024, from 9 AM to 2 PM.
• Sami Fruits (1550 Daniel-Johnson Blvd.):
  December 31, 2024, from 12:45 PM to 3:30 PM.
• Avril Supermarché Santé (1600 Le Corbusier Blvd.):
  December 31, 2024, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
• Maxi Vimont Grocery Store (2090 Laurentides Blvd.):
  December 31, 2024, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
• Pharmaprix Pharmacy (5780 Laurentides Blvd.):
  January 3, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 2:35 PM.
• Randolph Pub Ludique Centropolis (90 Centropolis Promenade):
  January 4, 2025, from 6 PM to 10:30 PM.
• GMF MédiCentre Chomedey (610 Curé-Labelle Blvd.):

  January 7, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, for those walking through the interior corridors or visiting Renaud-Bray.

  January 7, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 2:45 PM.
• Saint-François Medical Clinic (8048 Marcel-Villeneuve Ave.):
  January 9, 2025, from 8:20 AM to 11 AM.

Additional potential exposure sites in Montreal, the Laurentians, and Montérégie have also been identified.

At-Risk Populations

Certain groups are more vulnerable to complications from measles. If exposed, these individuals should contact Info-Santé 811 immediately for evaluation and possible preventive treatment, such as an antibody injection within seven days of exposure.

At-risk groups include:

• Infants under 1 year old
• Immunocompromised individuals
• Pregnant women not adequately vaccinated against measles

Protected Individuals

People considered protected against measles include:

• Those born before 1970
• Those with serological evidence of immunity
• Individuals with medical documentation of measles prior to January 1, 1996
• Those with written proof of vaccination

Vaccination

Vaccination remains the best defense against measles, a highly contagious and potentially severe disease.
Appointments for measles vaccination can be made through the Clic Santé website or by calling 1-877-644-4545.

In Laval, adults can get vaccinated at the Pont-Viau Local Service Point (1037 Laurentides Blvd.) or Centre Laval (1600 Corbusier Blvd., Door 3, Unit 86).
Children can book appointments for combined measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccines via Clic Santé.

Measures to Take

Protected individuals have minimal risk of contracting the disease. They should monitor for symptoms until the advised date, depending on the exposure site.
Unprotected individuals should isolate at home from the 5th day after exposure until the 14th day. Vaccination or antibody injection may be recommended.

Measles symptoms include fever, nasal congestion, cough, conjunctivitis, sensitivity to light, and a general feeling of discomfort. A rash typically appears on the face and body. Symptoms usually manifest 5 to 21 days after exposure, with an average incubation period of 10 to 14 days.

“Dad and I started together,” Polichronis proudly shared. “We bought the snack bar in 1988.”

The man, who stood out from his colleagues, was awarded the prize, disputed between 285 businesses. Patate 2000 collected, by the same token, more than 2,200 of the 25,000 votes counted from across Quebec.

The irony of that story is that Polichronis could have won the competition last year as well. However, he didn’t participate.

“Last year, we didn’t take part, and still had collected enough votes,” he said. “So, this year, we were invited to submit our application.”

By submitting their vote, customers of the winning snack bar had a chance to win $5,000 in cash. It’s Denis Desmarais who’s been declared the lucky winner of the prize.

Reasons why people voted for Patate 2000 are the rigor with which they’ve always served the best products, their diligence in serving their customers during the pandemic, and their contribution to weather the storm caused by the latter by serving free hot dogs to essential workers.
