The Office de la protection du consommateur announced that two health studios in the greater metropolitan area have been fined for violating the Consumer Protection Act.

The establishments in question are 10CountFitness and PumpCity Fitness, located in Beaconsfield and Longueuil respectively. Each received a fine of $6,070. Daniel Bayus, president of PumpCity Fitness, was also fined $1,906.

The Office accuses them of operating health studio activities without holding the permit required under the Act.

The violations occurred from January to April 2023 for 10CountFitness and in March 2023 for PumpCity Fitness. The former has since closed its doors.

Specific rules

It should be noted that the Consumer Protection Act defines health studios as establishments that provide goods or services intended to help a person improve their physical condition through weight control, treatment, diet, or exercise.

Any merchant operating a health studio—whether a fitness centre, gym, CrossFit facility, or weight-control clinic—must comply with specific rules designed to protect consumers. These rules outline requirements related to contract content and payments, and also govern cancellation conditions and penalties.

Operators must also hold a permit issued by the Office and provide a $25,000 security bond for each of their establishments. This amount is intended to ensure compliance with the law and may be used to compensate consumers in the event of a business closure. (N.P.)

As of Monday, March 30, the STL stated that it had enough vehicles to fully restore its regular service, which is sooner than expected.
“We thank our customers for their understanding during this period,” said Josée Roy, STL’s General Director, in a statement. “Our priority has been to minimize the impact on our customers as much as possible.”

On March 10, the transit company had announced the cancellation of around sixty bus trips due to significant delays in the regular maintenance of its bus fleet. These delays were mainly caused by challenges in its supply chain and equipment management.
“A thorough analysis of the situation allowed STL to implement short-term measures,” the statement explains. “Whether to address staff absences, accelerate the delivery of certain parts, or review specific operational processes, the teams redoubled their efforts, and these efforts have yielded more than satisfactory results.”

In parallel, STL has established a team bringing together various stakeholders to make recommendations aimed at improving the current structure and its various components.
“Our customers can be assured that we are doing everything possible to prevent a similar situation in the future,” concluded the General Director.

It should be noted that the opposition party, Action Laval, had called for an internal investigation “to obtain a clear picture of the situation and a recovery plan to restore service” during the municipal council meeting held on March 10. Mayor Stéphane Boyer had refused to discuss the proposal at the time but was not opposed to a possible investigation.
“I know that at STL, steps and actions are already underway. An investigation can take place afterward. It’s not the investigation itself that will solve the problem. STL is already taking action [to resolve it]. I don’t see any urgency to debate this tonight,” he had said. (N.P.)

On Thursday, March 26, the Laval Police Service (SPL) arrested 49-year-old Jerry Boncy in connection with three sexual-related cases. The arrest was carried out by investigators from the Sexual Crimes Unit.

Investigators believe the suspect, who allegedly has a significant criminal history including a prior case of a similar nature, may have victimized others. They are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying and contacting potential victims.

The facts
The investigation indicates that between January 2025 and January 2026, the suspect allegedly contacted his victims through dating websites. Using the alias “James” and a fake profile photo, he reportedly invited them to his residence, where he allegedly sexually assaulted them.

Court appearance and information
Arrested by the SPL on Thursday, March 26, Jerry Boncy is scheduled to appear for the first time at the Court of Québec at the Laval courthouse on Friday, March 27, to face multiple sexual assault charges.

Anyone who may have been a victim of Jerry Boncy is urged to contact the Laval police confidentially via the info line at 450-662-INFO (4636) or by dialing 911, referencing file number LVL250107-068.

Additional details
As multiple victims have been identified, the Major Crimes Serial Offender Investigation Management Structure (GECS), coordinated by the Sûreté du Québec, has been deployed.

At the request of Agropur, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is recalling various Farmers, Natrel, and Québon milk products due to the possible presence of glass fragments.

Chocolate milk products are particularly affected, although other types of milk are also being recalled from the market.

It should be noted that this recall is being carried out nationwide, particularly in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. These products should not be consumed, used, sold, served, or distributed.

More specifically, the presence of glass fragments is suspected in 2L cartons of Farmers 1% partially skimmed chocolate milk, 1% partially skimmed milk, 2% partially skimmed milk, and 3.25% homogenized milk; 2L cartons of Natrel 1% lactose-free partially skimmed chocolate milk; and 2L cartons of Québon 2% partially skimmed chocolate milk.

This recall follows test results conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

However, it is important to note that no illnesses associated with the consumption of these products have been reported to date.

What to do

First, check whether you have any of the affected products at home. Do not consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute any recalled products.

Anyone who believes they may have become ill after consuming a recalled product should contact their healthcare provider.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the place where they were purchased.

Investigation ongoing

The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently conducting a food safety investigation that could lead to the recall of additional products.

The agency is also ensuring that industry removes recalled products from the marketplace.

The Sûreté du Québec arrested 35-year-old Maxime Sauvé on Tuesday, March 24, in connection with various sexual offences.

Investigators from the MRC des Pays-d’en-Haut station carried out the arrest.

He appeared in court the same day at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse on charges related to sexual offences.

The man in his thirties was later released under conditions and is scheduled to return to court in June 2026 for the continuation of proceedings.

Three offences as a massage therapist

Maxime Sauvé, a resident of Sainte-Sophie, is allegedly involved in three separate incidents of sexual assault in connection with his work as a massage therapist in the Laurentians.

The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between January 1, 2018, and November 4, 2025.

The investigation suggests there may be additional victims.

As several victims have been identified, the Major Crimes Investigation Management Structure (GECS), coordinated by the Sûreté du Québec, has been deployed.

Since April 1, 2025, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has imposed fines totaling $47,000 on various companies for inaccurate or misleading claims regarding the country of origin of certain products.

A total of five companies were targeted:

• 1000717809 Ontario Limited (Fortinos Etobicoke) received a $10,000 penalty;
• Fresh in The City Inc. received a $7,000 penalty;
• Meatex Farms Ltd. received a $10,000 penalty;
• Oxford Frozen Foods Inc. received a $10,000 penalty;
• Real Canadian Superstore received a $10,000 penalty.

“It is the responsibility of food businesses to ensure that all food products they sell, whether manufactured in Canada or imported, comply with Canadian legislative requirements,” the CFIA stated in its release.

The federal agency also noted that its inspectors carry out several actions during inspections.

They raise awareness about the importance of providing accurate information on labels and remind businesses of their regulatory responsibilities, review labels and operational processes, prepare inspection reports and requests for corrective actions, verify that corrective measures have been implemented to prevent further non-compliance, and take enforcement action when necessary.

The CFIA also says it considers various factors in determining appropriate compliance and enforcement measures, including the level of risk, the harm caused by the non-compliance, the regulated party’s history, whether there was negligence or intent to violate federal requirements, and responsiveness in addressing the issue.

It also invites consumers and industry stakeholders to report cases where food product labeling may be considered misleading through its website.

The Laval squad now holds a record of 38-19-5 with 81 points. As a result, they can no longer be mathematically caught by the bottom three teams in their division in the race for the postseason.

After a goal by Jared Davidson in the first period, Samuel Blais and Sean Farrell helped the Rocket extend their lead to three during the second frame. The Penguins responded early in the third period through Gabe Klassen, but Joshua Roy and Florian Xhekaj sealed the win.

Goaltender Kaapo Kähkönen earned the victory by stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced.

Another Successful Season

This marks the Rocket’s fourth playoff appearance in five years.

The Laval team could even capture a second consecutive division title, as they currently sit atop the North Division with 10 games remaining. They lead the Syracuse Crunch (75 points), the Cleveland Monsters (73 points), and the Toronto Marlies (70 points).

As in previous years, the team finishing first will face the winner of a best-of-three matchup between the fourth- and fifth-place teams in the division semifinal.

For the second year in a row, the escape game Magnifico at Escaparium Laval has been ranked number one worldwide by the Top Escape Rooms Project (TERPECA).

This immersive experience outperformed Magic Universe and Monster Mashers, located in Spain and Belgium respectively, in the top three.

“This game is a source of pride,” says Jonathan Driscoll, owner of Escaparium Laval. “Five years ago, we never would have thought we’d be able to build something like this. With the acting, we aim to evoke strong emotions. We’re getting closer and closer to what you see in the movies.”

Magnifico is a 2.5-hour experience set in a circus-themed environment. It combines puzzles and theatrical segments during which participants meet several characters.

Five Times in the Top 100

Magnifico is not the only experience offered at 5545 des Rossignols Boulevard to rank in the global top 10.

Ctrl Alt Reboot reached fifth place in the rankings, while The Forgotten Cathedral sits in eighth position. The latter has been in the top 10 for three consecutive years.

“Our games age very well,” says Jonathan Driscoll. “We have an in-house design team that is constantly repairing and improving our games so they stay current.”

For example, Ctrl Alt Reboot is a revamped version of Rain Corp., which is completely different even though it takes place in the same universe.

The Wardrobe for Sale ranked 36th in TERPECA, while The Lost Island of the Voodoo Queen placed 78th.

Tourism

Escaparium Laval’s success extends beyond the greater metropolitan area. Escape room enthusiasts travel from all over to try the Laval-based creations.

In fact, the company doubled its proportion of players from the United States in less than a year, increasing from 4% to 8%. In total, nearly 10% of participants come from outside the country.

“People who come from abroad come to Quebec specifically to play our games,” says Jonathan Driscoll proudly. “That’s the main reason they’re here. Then they spend money in restaurants, other escape rooms, and activities. That makes us proud!”

Even some celebrities are eager to test the games. That includes Neil Patrick Harris, known for his role as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother, who tried several experiences for his birthday in 2025.

“He really came to Quebec for that, and he told us it was among the best experiences of his life!” Driscoll says.

Future Projects

The Escaparium Laval team is always seeking innovation to further develop the escape room market.

They are currently working on opening an immersive bar within their facilities. Visitors will encounter actors, specialty cocktails, and décor featuring various creatures.

Plans are also underway to add a new horror-themed escape game. Jonathan Driscoll assures that “it will be quite scary.” The opening is expected by August.
