The service will be offered from Friday, Nov. 25, to Saturday, Dec. 31, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

It has therefore been 27 years for the organization Opération Nez rouge Laval – Basses Laurentides, which exists since 1986.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers, who are giving their time and are dedicating themselves to make sure everyone has a good holiday season,” said Chief Inspector of the Service de police de Laval (SPL) François Dumais. “On behalf of police forces, it’s an honour today to speak on their behalf.”

Those same volunteers are helping their community in all ways possible, since in addition to making the roads safer, all of the donations raised will once again be used to support local organizations related to youth and amateur sport, the Opération Nez rouge press release mentioned.

However, with about fifty operational centres in the province, thousands of volunteers will be needed to provide rides. Registrations have started, and are continuing.

Let’s recall that Opération Nez rouge is a non-profit organization, whose goal is to educate the population to adopt better behaviors, i.e. to avoid driving while impaired.

The organization is calling for the generosity and solidarity of the Laval business community, as well as the the population during this holiday season, which promises to be difficult for many.

Having experienced a record increase in requests for food aid over the past year, the CBML has no choice, but to increase its number of Christmas baskets. Thus, the organization will distribute 200 more baskets than in previous years, bringing the number to 2,500.

“Since the beginning of October, in addition to the daily requests for food aid, people have been contacting us to make sure they’re having their Christmas basket,” said by press release José Haeck, head of the emergency food aid counter at Moisson Laval. “The requests are exploding, and the phone keeps ringing.”

“The general increase in the cost of living has caused an unprecedented increase in our requests for food aid,” added in the same press release Jean Gagnon, general manager of the CBML. “Facing this societal issue, we have decided to help as many Laval residents as possible, and distribute 200 additional Christmas baskets.”

This year, in addition to the 2,500 Christmas baskets to fill with food, the organization has set itself the goal of raising $350,000 in monetary donations. That expected amount of money will help the organization in its operations surrounding their annual campaign.

Until the end of December, the population, businesses and all public institutions in Laval are invited to take part in this major food drive, which will be used to feed 2,500 families. The distribution of Christmas baskets will take place from Dec. 18–20, at the CBML, assisted by 250 volunteers. (A.B.)

Along with his candidate Valérie Schmaltz, he visited the Ulric-Debien primary school, freshly renovated and enlarged in the Auteuil district, before revealing a commitment of $2 billion in the upgrading of educational establishments.

This would add to the $7 billion already provided for in the last budget to renovate schools over the next four years.

Education Being the Priority

“Our children and teachers deserve to have beautiful schools,” Legault said, who’s making education “the priority of all priorities”.

He gave as proof of this the $5.2 billion his government has invested in school renovations since 2018, which is twice the amount of $2.7 billion invested by the previous government.

An envelope increased to $9 billion would make it possible to renovate more than 600 schools by 2026, which would benefit, among other things, from larger windows, more spacious gymnasiums, more common areas, and greener and better equipped schoolyards.

Again in Laval

Legault has never been in town so often. In fact, it was his third press conference in three weeks, including the one that marked the unveiling of his first electoral commitment, last Aug. 12, surrounded at the moment by his six candidates who will by seeking the votes from the city-region’s residents.

Let’s note the CAQ is leading the polls in five of the six ridings of the territory.

“I’d like to make gains in Laval, and we’ll work very hard to do so,” Legault said. “As a city, Laval has been taken for granted for too by the Liberal Party. It’s time for us to replace them, but we’re not taking anything for granted.”

In the last elections, Laval had resisted the CAQ wave, with only Christopher Skeete in Sainte-Rose winning a riding for them.
