Deputy for Chomedey Sona Lakhoyan Olivier, and deputy for Mille-Îles Virginie Dufour, are sharing their disappointment with the resignation of Dominique Anglade, announced last Nov. 7.

The two elected provincial Liberals from Laval are deploring the departure of Anglade at the head of the Quebec Liberal Party (QPL), but, above all, the way in which the situation unfolded.

“I don’t understand all the frustration everyone else is talking about, because I have nothing but praise for her,” Lakhoyan Olivier said. “I don’t know what they’re denouncing. I don’t understand since it’s not what I experienced. She was a good chef, like a good mother.”

According to the two deputies, Anglade deserved to keep her position until the confidence vote, scheduled for the next party convention in 2023, where members could have debated appropriately on the future of the political party.

“I understand she made the decision to leave politics, but I think it’s a loss for Quebec,” Lakhoyan Olivier said. “She’s a great lady.”

“[Resigning] isn’t something I wanted,” said Dufour. “However, I probably would have made the same decision if I was in his shoes. It was cruel everything that was said, how it happened. There’s a person behind it all, a human who has a family. I really liked Anglade, I wanted to work with her.”

Anticipated Loss

The biggest loss in the history of the QLP during the last election campaign was not a surprise, the polls had predicted it. So why such treatment of the former leader?

“There are people who criticized her who present when the decline in support for the party began,” Dufour said. “Would they have done better than her? I’m sure not. It is very easy to criticize when you’re no longer there.”

In recent weeks, several QLP activists, some acting anonymously, have denounced the decisions, vision and directions given to the campaign by Anglade.

“Is it because she’s a woman?,” Lakhoyan Olivier asked. “Is it because she’s a colored woman? I don’t know, but I don’t see any other reason. Looks like Quebec has a problem with a female leader, an [aspiring] prime minister.”

Yesterday, an interim leader, the deputy for Lafontaine Marc Tanguay, was chosen to replace Anglade as head of the official opposition.

The QLP will decide when to hold a leadership race.

Someone from the public informed the Courrier Laval News about the participation of Andréanne Fiola, Parti québécois (PQ) candidate in the riding of Laval-des-Rapides, in a pornographic film.

This 12-minute production featuring two women and a man was put online in June 2021 on Pornhub’s website, while the 22-year-old aspiring deputy was campaigning at the municipal level for Parti Laval – Team Michel Trottier, as candidate in Laval-des-Rapides’s riding.

Reached by phone, Fiola, shaken, first denied the facts, and claimed not to have given her approval for the said video, before falling back on her lawyer. Still, the photos are unequivocal. Although the woman wears a prom mask in the photos and in the video of the XXX site, it’s tattoos that will have betrayed her.

Political background

Fiola is not new in politics, participating in her third electoral campaign. She ran for municipal elections in 2017 and 2021.

At the age of 16, she joined the PQ. She will make a slight detour to the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) before returning with the party she started with.

Former leader of Parti Laval, Michel Trottier, now a Liberal candidate in Sainte-Rose, is literally flabbergasted.

“Never I would have thought that,” he said. “We always checked the candidates who presented themselves for us. Fiola was a potentially winning candidate for us. She lost the election by just 62 votes.”

And if he had known at the time, would he have made her one of his candidates?

“No way,” Trottier assured. “Obviously, this was not the kind of candidate we were looking for to represent the citizens of Laval.”

Contacted twice, the press spokesperson of the PQ leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, had to come back to us. At the time of writing this article, the Courrier Laval News has still not heard back from him on it.

François Legault, leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) and Prime Minister, stopped Wednesday in Vimont, a riding he’s hoping to wrest from the Liberals on Oct. 3.

Along with his candidate Valérie Schmaltz, he visited the Ulric-Debien primary school, freshly renovated and enlarged in the Auteuil district, before revealing a commitment of $2 billion in the upgrading of educational establishments.

This would add to the $7 billion already provided for in the last budget to renovate schools over the next four years.

Education Being the Priority

“Our children and teachers deserve to have beautiful schools,” Legault said, who’s making education “the priority of all priorities”.

He gave as proof of this the $5.2 billion his government has invested in school renovations since 2018, which is twice the amount of $2.7 billion invested by the previous government.

An envelope increased to $9 billion would make it possible to renovate more than 600 schools by 2026, which would benefit, among other things, from larger windows, more spacious gymnasiums, more common areas, and greener and better equipped schoolyards.

Again in Laval

Legault has never been in town so often. In fact, it was his third press conference in three weeks, including the one that marked the unveiling of his first electoral commitment, last Aug. 12, surrounded at the moment by his six candidates who will by seeking the votes from the city-region’s residents.

Let’s note the CAQ is leading the polls in five of the six ridings of the territory.

“I’d like to make gains in Laval, and we’ll work very hard to do so,” Legault said. “As a city, Laval has been taken for granted for too by the Liberal Party. It’s time for us to replace them, but we’re not taking anything for granted.”

In the last elections, Laval had resisted the CAQ wave, with only Christopher Skeete in Sainte-Rose winning a riding for them.

Less than three weeks before the start of the elections, Prime Minister and leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), François Legault, was in Laval yesterday to present Céline Haytayan as a candidate in Laval-des-Rapides’s riding.

Working for more than 20 years in economic development, including 14 with Montréal International, a supraregional organization responsible for attracting foreign investment, Haytayan was recruited by the multinational Ubisoft, where she holds the position of Director of International Corporate Affairs.

“It’s an important addition for us and our economic team,” said Legault, insisting on his “obsession” for economy.

Haytayan described herself as a “woman of action”, and someone determined to “invest in the common good”.

“If elected, I will work with the mayor’s team (Stéphane Boyer) in order to attract, especially, more companies in life sciences and health technology, clean and digital technologies ,” said Haytayan, by evoking the presence of the Cité de la biotechnologie et de la santé humaine du Grand Montréal in Laval.

Haytayan also talked about climate change, expressing her interest in “creating an industrial cluster, or an innovation zone in climate technologies”.

Team Completed

The new candidate joins the five others already participating to the campaign in Laval, which are Christopher Skeete (Sainte-Rose), Julie Séide (Mille-Îles), Valérie Schmaltz (Vimont), George Platanitis (Chomedey) and Alice Abou-Khalil (Fabre).
