One year ago, Montreal Comedian Charles Daghlian absolutely wanted to bring English comedy to his hometown of Laval, where it was non-existent for local residents.

Having to make the perilously journey from Laval all the way downtown through snowstorms, construction cones and potholes to get his comedy fix, Charles believed there was a golden opportunity in providing English comedy on the North Shore. Along with the partnership of Sid Khullar of MTLComedyClub, he started Laval’s Got Jokes, a monthly English comedy show at the House of Jazz of Laval “to prove that his town of Laval is not only the butt of the jokes”, by press release.

One year and 12 shows later, Charles, Sid, the House of Jazz and their audience celebrate the 1 year anniversary of their show (named #3 on the CultMtl list of Best Comedy Shows in town)! “The energy in this room is different. The comics and the audiences have such a good time! And the venue is so beautiful also! Thousands of chandeliers, the way the stage is set up, the balcony. It all comes together nicely.”

The gala, which will take place Tuesday May 30th at 8:00pm, will feature a lineup of comedians, as well as some special surprises, and a live house band! From witty one-liners to side-splitting stories.

“We’re thrilled to bring together such a talented group of comedians for this event,” said Charles Daghlian, the event organizer. “We want to give people a chance to forget about their troubles and just laugh for a night. I’m going all out! Live band, special surprise comedians. I’m even going to suit up for the occasion!”

On top of one year of English comedy, Charles and Sid are starting a French show at the House of Jazz as well, for the French speaking public of Laval and North-Shore in need of laughter. The first show will take place on Tuesday, June 13th.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.mtlcomedyclub.com/laval.

During a press conference held this week in Montreal, leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec, Éric Duhaime, unveiled the measures proposed by his political group regarding the protection of the French language, including its strategy for the francization of immigrants.

Samson Report

The Party’s proposals are inspired by the Samson Report, submitted in 2016 by Claire Samson, outgoing MP for Iberville. This report aimed to take stock of the policies aimed at promoting French.

It concluded, at the time, that “the decline in francization in Quebec is not attributable to immigrants’s lack of interest in French, nor to the lack of dedication of those involved in francization, but to the negligence of the Government of Quebec on this issue for some fifteen years. The drastic increase in immigration thresholds, combined with a reduction in resources devoted to francization has created deplorable effects.”

The Conservative Party is proposing a series of measures in order to improve the learning of French, and make francization a real national priority.

Protection and Sharing

The Conservative Party proposes to protect French in Quebec by implementing various measures.

First, it offers a personalized and turnkey francization course for adult immigrants, directing them towards adequate training, and reducing their current administrative obligations.

Second, it would like to set up a French Language Commissioner, who would receive complaints from the public and make recommendations.

A compulsory francization program for newcomers with insufficient command of the language would also be put in place. The program, which would last from 30 to 72 weeks, would include an initiation component to the realities of Quebec, its culture, its institutions and its values. It would also include a component focused on the professional field.

Other solutions are also offered by Éric Duhaime and his team.

“I hope immigrants we’re welcoming here will integrate our society and flourish among us,” Duhaime said in a press release. “They’re the first victims of the failures of francization in Quebec, when it should be considered a tremendous opportunity, a real passport for successful integration into Quebec society, as well as a source of pride for the one who manages to achieve mastery of our language. (A.B.)

A few weeks before the Pope’s visit in Quebec, Laval’s region was receiving a royal visit from Africa. Victor Kana III, king of the Cameroonian chiefdom Bafou, was in Laval from June 15 to July 5.

It’s one of the largest chiefdoms in the country. It’s the second largest in western Cameroon for area and population, just behind Bandjoun. The king has been leading his community since 1994.

Victor Kana III settled here with his close guard, in a rented house near Pont-Viau and Laval-des-Rapides sectors.

“I was outside the country, so I decided to rent my house for a few months,” said Laval resident Roxanne Jean, who’s owning the place. “They told me they’d like to rent it 17 days in order to host a king. Of course, I didn’t believe them at first.”

However, after discussing with the organizers, she understood it wasn’t a bad joke. She wanted to put everything in place for the king’s coming.

Arrival and Stay

The king’s coming didn’t pass over in silence in the neighbourhood. Many neighbours told Roxanne Jean they were impressed by the welcoming ceremony.

Victor Kana III’s visit was then punctuated by stops in Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa to showcase the Bafous’s community.

“We want to promote our culture, and show that even those who’ve gone far from our village shouldn’t leave their culture,” the king said in an exclusive interview with the Courrier Laval. That’s one of the reasons we’re here.”

Roxanne Jean says her meeting with the king and his close guard was particularly touching. She believes she has discovered a peaceful, open-minded, generous and respectful community.

A town twinned with Laval since October 2007, the Romanian municipality of Botosani now has a green space marking this association.

The park is located in the very centre of the city, on one of its most important boulevards, “the most beautiful”, said Romanian-born microbiologist Vania Atudorei.

A youth centre is located very close to the place, and right in front of the large hospital of the region.

Other Details

Laval Park is 2360 square meters. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of this twinning, the municipal authorities of Botosani have planted 15,000 flowers, and 1,100 shrubs are planted there.

“At all entrances and exits of the city, the municipality has installed road signs recalling this international twinning,” Atudorei said.

Atudorei’s also the president of the Romanian Association of Laval, and has been living on Île Jésus for more than 30 years.

Important Gesture

Let’s recall that in Quebec, the Romanian community numbers around 55,000 people.

“It’s a tribute to the ethnic diversity of Laval, the third largest city in Quebec [and tenth in Canada], in the current context where 30 per cent of its population comes from cultural communities,” Atudorei concluded.

Founded between a plain of Romanian Moldavia and the plateau of Suceava, Botosanie had a population of 106,847 inhabitants in 2011, as indicated on the Wikipedia page of Romania’s northeastern municipality.
