Elected since 2015 as deputy for Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne, and leader of Quebec’s Liberal Party (QLP) since May 2020, Dominique Anglade announced her resignation during a press briefing today.

On Dec. 1, Anglade’s seven years of political involvement will be over when she will also step down as an MP.

On December 1, Ms. Anglade’s seven years of political involvement will be over, when she’ll also step down as deputy.

During the press briefing, the now former liberal leader said to have started a personal reflection following the disappointing results of the last elections.

Why

“The demographic, cultural, socio-economic and ecological issues are too important for the official opposition to tear itself apart,” Anglade told the media. “The QLP must operate a renewal of its political offer, but also of its way of doing politics. We don’t have the luxury of being undermined by internal intrigues that Quebecois have no use for. »

In the last provincial elections, the QLP won the worst universal suffrage in its history, with 14.37 per cent of the vote, being overtaken by Québec Solidaire (QS) and the Parti Québécois (PQ).

A few weeks ago, Anglade expelled deputy Marie-Claude Nichols, elected within the party since 2014, in the wake of the unveiling of her shadow cabinet. That reaction, which several analysts are describing as extreme, is one of the potential reasons behind Anglade’s decision.

Political Life

Anglade made her political debut in 2012, as president of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ).

In 2015, she joined the QLP, and was elected as deputy for Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne on Nov. 9 of the same year.

In January 2016, she was given the functions of Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation, and Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy under Philippe Couillard’s government.

She thus became the first person of Haitian origin to hold a ministerial position in Canada.

On May 11, 2020, Anglade became the first woman to head the QLP, the dominating party of Quebec’s political sphere for 150 years.

François Legault’s Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) wrote history by winning four of the six ridings in Laval, dislodging the Liberal Party (LP) in Vimont, Laval-des-Rapides and Fabre.

In the riding of Sainte-Rose, the victory of outgoing deputee Christopher Skeete was never in doubt. Re-elected with the strongest majority in the region, Skeete will team up for the next four years with Valérie Schmaltz (Vimont), Céline Haytayan (Laval-des-Rapides) and Alice Abou-Khalil (Fabre), all three elected for the first time in the National Assembly.

Laval’s two other ridings remain liberal, but will be represented by two new deputees in Virginie Dufour (Mille-Îles) and Sona Lakhoyan Olivier (Chomedey).

Laval-des-Rapides

In Laval-des-Rapides, after a hotly contested battle, Céline Haytayan finally got the better of the riding’s outgoing deputee, Saul Polo, who was seeking a third term.

Haytayan received 10,599 votes, winning by a majority of 1,053 votes over her liberal rival. She obtained 31.9 per cent of the votes, while Polo finished with 28.7 per cent.

Josée Chevalier of Québec solidaire (QS) finished third with 16.7 per cent of the votes, followed by Parti québécois (PQ) candidate Andréanne Fiola at 12.9 per cent, Conservative Party (CP) representative Nicolas Lussier-Clément with 8.6 per cent, and Green Party (GP) candidate Zied Damergi 1.2 per cent.

The electoral turnout in Laval-des-Rapides reached 61.5 per cent, down two tenths of a percentage point compared to the 2018 election.

Vimont

Vimont also had a close race until the end, this time between Valérie Schmaltz (CAQ) and Anabela Monteiro (LP).

At the end of the evening, Schmaltz finally won by 1,415 votes over the one who had headed the riding’s office for 10 years, then represented by the deputy Jean Rousselle. This win for the CAQ thus put an end to a sequence of seven consecutive Liberal electoral victories in Vimont.

Stefano Piscitelli (CP) finished third with 12.9 per cent of the votes, in front of Josée Bélanger (QS) at 11.5 per cent, Nathalie Lavigne (PQ) with 10.6 per cent, and Rita Lo Cicero (GP) at 0.9 per cent of the votes in Vimont.

The riding, that counts 46,081 voters, had a turnout of 70 per cent, up 0.8 percentage point from 2018.

Fabre

Alice Abou-Khalil (CAQ) won in what was another tight battle in her riding, against Sonia Baudelot (LP). That puts an end to a 19-year-long liberal reign in Fabre. Abou-Khalil won with a majority of 302 votes.

Abou-Khalil and Baudelot totaled 21,522 of the 34,328 validated ballots.

The other votes went to Stéphane Turmel (CP) with 5,216, Jessy Léger (QS) with 3,822, Catherine Dansereau-Redhead (PQ) with 3,348, and Lynn Buchanan (GP) with the last 420.

The electoral turnout in Fabre was 62.6 per cent, which is up 1.4 percentage point compared to 2018.

Sainte-Rose

Re-elected in Sainte-Rose, Skeete registered the strongest majority of the six candidates elected last night in Laval, ahead of Michel Trottier (LP) by 5276 votes.

Skeete’s 14,082 votes earned him 38.5 per cent of the 36,567 votes counted in Sainte-Rose.

Trottier concluded the evening with 24.2 per cent of the votes, followed by Karine Cliche (QS) at 14.3 per cent, Lyne Jubinville (PQ) at 12.3 per cent, Stéphanie Beauchamp (CP) with 9.4 per cent, and Pierrette Kamning Nguendjong (GP) with the remaining 0.8 per cent.

The electoral turnout in the riding has fallen by 2.5 percentage points in four years, from 70 to 67.5 per cent.

Chomedey

Unsurprisingly, Chomedey remained liberal.

Succeeding Guy Ouellette, the new deputee Sona Lakhoyan Olivier earned the trust of 36.5 per cent of voters, which translated into a comfortable majority of 3,198 votes.

That said, support for the LP in this liberal fortress continues to crumble, as the overwhelming majority of some 26,000 votes obtained in 2014 had already been reduced to 7,968 votes in 2018.

Last night, George Platanitis (CAQ) received 8,691 votes, which is 26.7 per cent of the ballots.

Following behind, we have CP Me Konstantinos Merakos (6,464 votes; 19.9 per cent), QS Zachary Robert (2,576 votes; 7.9 per cent), PQ Rachid Bandou (2,338 votes; 7.2 per cent), GP Sahbi Nablia (311 votes; 0.96 per cent), and Federica Gangai of Bloc Montreal – Team Balarama Holness (290 votes; 0.89 per cent).

As for the participation rate of 54.5 per cent, it’s about the same as that observed four years ago, up by half a percentage point.

The Liberals have dominated in Chomedey since the creation of this riding, in 1980.

Mille-Îles

Finally, in Mille-Îles, Virginie Dufour has managed to keep the riding in the hands of the LP for an eighth consecutive election, resisting to the push of the CAQ that began four years ago.

Trailing all evening, the former municipal councillor of Sainte-Rose made an impressive an comeback and took the lead for the first time shortly after 10 p.m., when more than 85 per cent of ballot boxes had been counted.

Once ahead, Dufour kept up the pace to overtake Julie Séide (CAQ) by 425 votes, ending the evening with 32.4 per cent and 9,522 votes.

Séide obtained 30.9 per cent of the votes, far ahead of QS Guillaume Lajoie (12.9 per cent), PQ Michel Lachance (12.1 per cent), CP Ange Claude Bigilimana (10.6 per cent), and GP Bianca Jitaru (1.2 per cent).

In Mille-Îles, 67 per cent of the 44,401 legal voters went to the polling stations, up by half a percentage point compared to 2018.

Teachers of Collège Montmorency declared a strike for climate justice today, and gathered close to the main door of the establishment, the one overlooking De l’Avenir Boulevard, to express their dissatisfaction.

“The climate crisis is not very present in the electoral campaign and we find that a little disturbing,” underlines Amélie Therrien, president of the Syndicat des enseignantes et enseignants du cégep Montmorency (SEECM). “It’s a must to mobilize collectively in order to respond to this lack of political will.”

Some SEECM members were already in front of the CEGEP at 7 o’clock.

“For the teachers of Collège Montmorency, the climate situation isn’t technical, but political,” the SEECM said. “It depends directly on our ability to organize ourselves and collectively limit our consumption, for the sake of justice. In this sense, they’re especially calling for a complete exit from fossil fuels by 2030, as well as a massive reinvestment in public services and the social safety net.”

To Repeat

Therrien said it’s still too early to say if there will be other strikes for the cause.

Nevertheless, SEECM members are seeing it as their duty to lead the way.

“If we’re keeping this in mind, we could imagine that, indeed, it could happen again,” the president concluded.

Data from the last ballot dated Oct. 1, 2018 shows an increase, since there were 40 per cent of female candidates four years ago.

“We’ve seen progress in Quebec in recent years concerning the place of women in positions of power, and this trend seems to be continuing, even increasing,” said Flavie Payette-Renouf, director and co- founder of La Cuvée. (J.B./IJL)

The Association pour le Transport Collectif de Laval (ATCL) lengthens the requests for the elections. Between a new metro line and the extension of the existing one, the organization has major projects for Laval residents.

Elections are always an opportunity for the various organizations to send their grievances to the parties presenting themselves. The ATCL is no exception to the rule. The OBNL (non-profit organisation) has sent a press release in which appears an exhaustive list of its demands for the next mandate.

“We want the candidates of the six ridings to learn about the projects we’re defending, and commit to supporting sustainable mobility if elected,” said Nicolas Lemire, president of the ATCL.

Among the requests, the ambitious development of a structuring transport network deployed throughout the municipality. The ATCL board of directors even argues that the city is ready for a more developed public transport network that would serve its entire territory. Also according to the association, the budget allocated for public transport should equal the budget allocated to the maintenance of Laval’s road network.

A metro line, light metro or tramway crossing the island from East to West, and connecting to downtown, is also part of the requests sent to the six candidates of the different parties. Such an initiative regarding the public transport network would consolidate the development of the city, and change transport habits of Laval residents, according to what the OBNL’s board of directors suggests.

The ATCL also expects a favorable response to its proposal to extend the orange line to downtown Laval, as well as for the expressways it would like to see erected on the entire road network of its territory.

“The provincial government is an essential player through its support for various public transport projects,” Lemire concluded. “From an ecological transition perspective, candidates must show it’s a priority for them, as it is for us.”

Dominique Anglade, leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, was at the Centre de la nature, in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, during Family Day, yesterday.

In the middle of the afternoon, the 48-year-old woman went to meet Laval families for nearly an hour.

Candidates of her party took advantage of Anglade’s presence to discuss with the members of their riding too.

There were many discussions, but most of them were about two major topics affecting families, daycare and needs in the school environment.

Many other candidates from different parties were also at the Centre de la nature. However, they didn’t receive the same privileges as the Liberal Party.

Nicolas Lussier-Clément, candidate in Laval-des-Rapides for the Conservative Party of Quebec, misunderstands the ban on solicitation during Family Day, while the Liberal team arrived with “the biggest political sign that exists”.

“When I arrived, police officers didn’t want to give me access to the site with my sweater, displaying the logo of my party,” Lussier-Clément said. “Finally, they accepted, and as I walked around, I saw the Liberal Party bus. However, the fact it was planned that Anglade would be there, and we were prohibited from being there with our political items, that’s what disappoints me.”

Lussier-Clément also notes that candidates from Québec solidaire were denied entry to the site with their signs.

François Legault, leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) and Prime Minister, stopped Wednesday in Vimont, a riding he’s hoping to wrest from the Liberals on Oct. 3.

Along with his candidate Valérie Schmaltz, he visited the Ulric-Debien primary school, freshly renovated and enlarged in the Auteuil district, before revealing a commitment of $2 billion in the upgrading of educational establishments.

This would add to the $7 billion already provided for in the last budget to renovate schools over the next four years.

Education Being the Priority

“Our children and teachers deserve to have beautiful schools,” Legault said, who’s making education “the priority of all priorities”.

He gave as proof of this the $5.2 billion his government has invested in school renovations since 2018, which is twice the amount of $2.7 billion invested by the previous government.

An envelope increased to $9 billion would make it possible to renovate more than 600 schools by 2026, which would benefit, among other things, from larger windows, more spacious gymnasiums, more common areas, and greener and better equipped schoolyards.

Again in Laval

Legault has never been in town so often. In fact, it was his third press conference in three weeks, including the one that marked the unveiling of his first electoral commitment, last Aug. 12, surrounded at the moment by his six candidates who will by seeking the votes from the city-region’s residents.

Let’s note the CAQ is leading the polls in five of the six ridings of the territory.

“I’d like to make gains in Laval, and we’ll work very hard to do so,” Legault said. “As a city, Laval has been taken for granted for too by the Liberal Party. It’s time for us to replace them, but we’re not taking anything for granted.”

In the last elections, Laval had resisted the CAQ wave, with only Christopher Skeete in Sainte-Rose winning a riding for them.
