About 60 hours after the gunshots that injured four people behind Collège Montmorency, the Service de police de Laval (SPL) says the investigation is progressing well, while the suspect in this shooting is still being tracked.

For its part, the Fraternité des policiers de Laval came out publicly, first to direct its thoughts to the victims, families, as well as students and staff of the CEGEP, having lived through horrible hours in being confined after the discharge of gunshotsthat occurred on the evening of Nov. 11.

It also mentioned “the great work, commitment and availability of its members during the large-scale operation deployed”.

Surprise and Disappointment

However, taking the example of that other event of armed violence to occur in Laval in recent months, or even years, the Fraternité des policiers de Laval recalled, in a press release, that “obviously, this extra time puts immense pressure on Laval police officers, who continue, however, to be present at all hours of the day and night. This inevitably has an impact on their personal and family life”.

Supporting the idea, as Mayor of Laval Stéphane Boyer did the day after this other shooting, resources to stop armed violence remain limited. the Fraternité des policiers de Laval specified that no funding has been granted to the SPL, while Quebec’s Government extended no less than 250 million over five years for Montreal’s police.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, the Embassy Plaza will host a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The evening will be embellished with musical performances, including Cynthia Baroud, finalist on the show La Voix in 2015, and Nicola Ciccone.

Between performances, many draws are planned, as well as auctions that will take place throughout the evening in order to raise more funds.

There will also be a conference by a breast cancer survivor. She will talk about her personal journey towards healing.

More than 450 people are expected at the event.

“After two pandemic years, we’re expecting people to be willing to celebrate for a good cause, and be generous,” said Ihab Zaid, general manager of CIBC banking centres in Laval and chairman of the evening’s organizing committee.

Zaid said the goal is to raise $15,000, and he remains positive it will be achieved.

CIBC has supported this cause for many years, but it’s the first time it has its annual event in Laval.

Laval économique is relaunching its funding program in order to encourage manufacturing companies to accelerate their digital transformation.

In addition to providing strategic support, the program finances 25 per cent of the equipment acquisition cost, up to $100,000, in addition to related costs for a maximum total amount of $125,000 per company.

According to Mayor Stéphane Boyer, that digital shift and the resulting increased productivity are essential “to keep companies competitive and meet their workforce challenges”.

Leverage

Resulting from the Laval, capitale des opportunités Economic recovery plan tabled in the summer of 2020, this direct financial assistance program for the manufacturing sector was a big success last year.

As a proof, for each dollar invested by Laval, the 6 beneficiary companies were giving 15. The $750,000 in municipal funds granted in 2021 have generated investment projects of approximately $11.3 million.

This measure not only contributed to maintaining 600 jobs and creating 53 new ones, but also to making the funded businesses even more profitable. By chance, they’re estimating an average growth in turnover of 20 per cent over the past year.

“[…] with the help of the program, manufacturing companies have been able to increase their production capacity up to 24 hours a day, while reducing the impact of labour shortage and automating their processes,” we can read in the press release published by the City on May 24.

Nearly a Million

Director of Laval économique, Lidia Divry urges SMEs leaders to initiate the movement, or continue their digital transformation project, as the case may be.

“Phase II of the Accélérateur d’opportunités – Soutien à la productivité program is currently accessible to all manufacturing companies in Laval, and so far, about 10 [of them] have expressed an interest in submitting a project.”

For the relaunch of that project, Ms. Divry and her team have a limited budget of $962,000.

For any other information, please contact Benard Pitre, commissioner of technological transformation, at b.pitre@laval.ca ou 438 223-5384.

On April 29, the Ministry of Tourism has announced it has awarded grants totaling $182,842, most of which going to the Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles (PRMI).

Manager of the Parc, the Éco-Nature organization was thus given $86,842 to develop its offer of activities and its infrastructures.

That financial help from the government was given after the first call for projects under the Program for the Development of the Tourism Offer in regional parks, whose management has been entrusted to the Association of Regional Parks of Quebec.

A part of this amount will fund the addition of three new interactive self-guided tours on the river.

Other investments

Under component 3 of the 2020-2022 Regional Tourism Partnership Agreement, six tourism projects are sharing a total of $96,000.

The BFLY attractions will notably receive $21,000 to purchase portable domes, “with the goal of offering an exhibition on tropical butterflies and the magical world of BFLY”, is the written in the press release published by Tourisme Québec.

Mouvement Diapason will receive the same amount, which will contribute to the financing of a sound and light project in the Bois de l’Équerre. Here, we’re talking about a 1.2 km luminous trail for the Symbiose event and the Diapason Festival in fall 2023.

For its part, the Festival des bières will receive $20,000 in order to support its summer edition. The Crux Laval will be donated $15,000 to buy climbing equipment with the goal of developing an offer made for a family clientele.

The Groupe Hôtelier Grand Château will be able to set up a video wall at the entrance of the Sheraton Convention Centre of Saint-Hyacinthe, thanks to a funding of $15,000 that will, in part, spread information linked to events happening in the region.

Finally, the Centre d’interprétation de l’eau will receive $4000 in order to develop an online ticketing system integrated into its website. (S.ST-A./IJL)

The Quebec government is giving $54,644 to the Sphère santé sexuelle globale (SSSG) for its Vénus project, as part of the prevention and intervention program regarding sexual abuse of young people.

With this initiative, Laval’s community organization is employing an outreach worker in order to create meaningful connections with young girls working in the sex industry on Île Jésus who are victims, or at risk of being victims of sexual, financial, psychological and physical violence.

In Virtual Mode

The Internet part of the project connects with another group of young girls, which are those receiving their clients in private places, like an apartment, a condominium or house, and can only be joined online.

The project submitted by Laval’s SSSG thus answers the prevention and intervention program’s criteria, which financially supports projects looking to prevent and counter sexual abuse of young people who have been victims of it, or are at risk.

The prevention and intervention program mainly aims to increase the intervention capacity regarding to the fight against sexual abuse, improve knowledge on the characteristics of the victims, and establish practices that meet their expressed needs.

It’s one of the key measures of the government’s action plan for 2021-2026, in response to the recommendations of the Select Committee on the Sexual Exploitation of Minors.

Words from Elected Politicians

“Every day, the trap of sexual abuse closes on a significant number of minors, including young girls,” said via press release Geneviève Guilbault, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security. “(…) Thereby, we also recognize the extraordinary work of our community organizations on the field in terms of prevention and intervention.”

“The safety of our young girls isn’t negotiable, regardless of the field they decide to work in for a living,” added Christopher Skeete, MP for Sainte-Rose, in the same press release. Yet, the number of young girls who are victims of sexual abuse is barely decreasing. (…) I am sure that the hiring of an outreach worker Laval’s SSSG will be of great help to its clientele of young women.” (B.L.)
