Passing almost daily in the area, Tony Sutera Sardo is starting to find the situation particularly dangerous, especially since that’s an area used by many cars and pedestrians.

The Laval resident also tried to find out more about the situation, contacting the City of Laval by several means in recent weeks. After being redirected from a department to another, by phone, Tony Sutera Sardo took advantage of social networks to send messages to the City, on Facebook and Instagram.

“weeks passed, and as it’s very dark in the evening, it can end up being favourable to accidents,” he said. “I’m wondering what’s happening, because it’s too long. If the lack of lighting had only lasted a week, I would have thought it was perhaps just a lack of equipment, or something like that. It’s  a boulevard, not a secondary street. It’s not that a street wouldn’t be important, but on Saint-Martin, there are a lot of people passing by.”

When the City replied to the message, it asked Tony Sutera Sardo for his contact details. He obviously didn’t understand the link with the situation.

“I couldn’t understand why, because yes, I can give them my contact details, but just let me know how soon it will be case closed.”

By email, the City of Laval told the Courrier Laval News “it is working to rectify the situation as soon as possible, given that the defective main circuit breaker of the Saint-Martin Boulevard lighting circuit can’t be replaced without de-energization of the circuit by Hydro-Québec”. It adds that this is an important issue of prevention, since the safety of municipal teams could be “seriously compromised”.

That experience, made in collaboration with Illumi, offers an interesting light concept that revolves around the polar world, including penguin and moose structures.

As in 2021, six restaurateurs will take turns to offer a special, or regular menu in those bubbles. Juliette & Chocolat launched the initiative in the week of Dec. 5–11, being followed by Jack Astor’s restaurant for the period of Dec. 12–23.

After a holiday break, the bubbles will be reopened, through Zibo!, providing service from Jan. 9–22. It will be succeeded by restaurants Les Enfants Terribles (Jan. 23 to Feb. 5), Le Balthazar (Feb. 6–12) and Enoteca Monza (Feb. 13–26).

Juliette & Chocolat will be back to close the season during the week of Feb. 27 to March 5.

The event was ending with a countdown, leading to the lighting of the large Christmas tree, located in the garden near entrances 3 and 4.

It all started around 5:30 p.m., with already several people on site to enjoy choirs and activities.

Disappointment

However, many people have shared, on social media, their frustration and/or disappointment concerning the tree’s illumination time.

The event’s announcement was made rather late, according to many Laval residents. Also, some of those people are mentioning it’s only once there that they learned, thanks to the security deployed, that the lighting of the tree wasn’t scheduled until around 7:30 p.m., which they’re considering too late for young children.

Others are also claiming it was very difficult to hear the choir due to the mall’s ambient noise.

New Universes

Apart from Spooky at Illumi, the journey also presents new universes: Air Illumi where you can observe beautiful rockets and impressive planes, The Green Turn featuring green animals and plants, The Fantastic Flights highlighting cute hot air balloons and The Whacky Village where houses are upside down.

“There is not one universe that I prefer to the others,” said Normand Latourelle, creator of Cavalia Inc. and Illumi. “They are just as spectacular. Every year, the team aims to renew approximately 50 per cent of the universes in order to ensure an authentic experience for recurring visitors.”

However, the most innovative attraction of this new edition is undoubtedly The Submarine Tunnel. More immersive than ever, this journey immerses visitors in the heart of the ocean with projections and animations on a 180-degree dome. This universe uses video mapping technology and guarantees a memorable trip.

For the whole family

Every recent universe now includes structures that can be ridden by children.

In addition, The Balloon Bal allows participants to let off steam mid-course by disappearing into an interior space filled with beach balls.

“It’s important that the children have fun,” explained Latourelle. “They often have too much energy and love to let it all out during this experience. I guarantee you that the youth will sleep when they get home.”

By car or by foot, participants can experience the dazzling worlds of Illumi from Oct. 20, 2022, to Jan. 8, 2023.

The situation is concerning for residents of that sector of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, located in the southeast quadrant of Concorde Boulevard and Joly Street.

Without News

In mid-March, Isabelle Dunn, who lives near the St-Vincent-de-Paul cemetery, noticed the streetlights on her street, and those in the neighbouring streets were no longer working.

After a month, Dunn made a first request to the 311 Service, which was unsuccessful. Her second request sent a month later also turned out to be unsuccessful.

On her third attempt, in June, a city employee allegedly told her that the issue had been raised by local residents, and that the requests had been closed despite the fact they were not resolved.

Hydro-Québec would have finally come to repair some small elements of the elements, but the source of the problem would come from equipment belonging to Laval, according to the applicant.

“It’s sad that after five months, we, the residents, have to run after our city to be given explanations,” Dunn said. “We haven’t had any light since mid-March, it’s a bit pathetic.”

Christine Poirier, member of Laval’s executive committee with whom Dunn was able to discuss the issue, had not returned the call from the Courrier Laval at the time of publishing the piece.

Lack of Services

Only accessible by Concorde Boulevard (Est) and Lesage Boulevard, the four streets plunged into darkness are often forgotten by public services, adds Dunn, pointing to the garbage cans in the streets, not always picked up.

“I had to make a request to clean the street,” Dunn concluded. “I have other things to do than ask public services to come in our area.”

No less than 585,000 visitors of all ages gathered in Laval to let themselves be carried away by the luminous poetry of the 19 universes that made the third edition of Illumi a resounding success. The luminous tradition established by Latourelle is more tangible than ever. Over half a million tickets were sold between Oct. 28, 2021 and Aug. 14, 2022. Illumi will have operated for 38 weeks, representing 185 breathtaking evenings. About 75 per cent of visitors were adults, and 25 per cent were children.

“In more than 40 years of career in the field of entertainment, I would never have imagined being able to create such a large-scale event that could attract such an impressive number of visitors of all ages,” Latourelle said. “The diversity of Illumi‘s audience is enriching for all of us, and I’m proud of our teams for having succeeded in imagining an activity where everyone can find what they are looking for.”

Illumi will be back in Laval for its fourth edition this fall, with many new features and original programming throughout the season. The kick-off will be given on Oct. 5, with a Halloween special. (J.L.B./IJL)
