Whether you’re a parent, a babysitter or hosting friends with children, it’s important to protect youngsters from poisonings. There are a surprising number of potential poisons found throughout the home.

Laundry lessons
Laundry detergent packets are small and often brightly coloured. Children and adults with cognitive impairment can mistake them for food or toys. Laundry detergent packets should be stored out of sight and out of reach, such as in a secured cupboard or on a high shelf, in the manufacturer’s child-resistant container.

Cleaning supplies
The products you use to clean your house can contain toxic ingredients. They can create harmful gases if mixed together, and the bright colours of some can be mistaken for some kids’ favourite sugary drinks. Keep them locked in cupboards or drawers and out of reach and sight from young children and pets. Make sure closures on child-resistant containers are working.

Medicine
If you have children in the house, all medicines should be stored in a locked cabinet. That includes things that you might think of as relatively harmless such as over-the-counter pain killers. If a child finds a bottle of these in, say, a night table drawer and mistakes them for candies, they could become seriously ill. If you have expired medications or old prescription drugs you no longer need, drop them off at a pharmacy for safe disposal.

Store your loose change, small magnets and button batteries safely
If you tend to empty your pockets on a counter or desk when you walk in the door, you’ll need to rethink your habits. Countless young children have swallowed shiny silver coins, button batteries and small magnets over the years. The risks range from choking to severe internal injuries, even death. Find a safe place to store these items out of sight and reach of young children.

Store your cannabis safely
If you’re a consumer of cannabis, particularly edible cannabis products make sure they’re safely stored where children can’t access them and experience a poisoning. Leave them in the plain, child-resistant packaging of the legal supplier you bought them from and store them in a locked drawer or container that is up high and out of reach of children.

Every time you go online or use an app, you’re making choices about who to do business with. While those choices may not be top-of-mind, not all businesses make your privacy a priority. As more companies ask for personal information, it can be confusing to know when it makes sense to fill something out and when to say no. Before sharing anything personal, get a better idea of how a company might treat you and your personal information, and check for these three things:

Trust. If a company values its relationship with you, their privacy policy should be easy to find and easy to understand. Is it front and centre, or buried at the bottom of several pages? Beyond their privacy policy, have they shared how they will handle your personal information in an ethical manner? To be trustworthy, they should also have a solid track record of social responsibility, demonstrating a commitment to social purpose. These are big clues that tell you whether a business is thinking about you, or itself.

Transparency. Companies should be clear and open about how your information will be used every time it is collected. They should earn your trust and make you feel comfortable that your information will be used responsibly. In fact, a recent survey by Telus revealed that only 30 per cent of Canadians trust organizations to protect their personal data, but more than half agree that organizations can increase their trust by being transparent about data use.

Third-party permissions. Laws require companies to be upfront about if and how they will share your personal information with third parties. So be sure to review the explanations provided. Does the business say it will sell your data to advertisers? Or that it will never share your information with anyone without your permission?

A 31-year-old man died when getting shot in his immobilized vehicle, on the roadway, Canada Street, in Saint-François.

This new firearm discharge event occurred on Friday, Oct. 7, around 11:20 p.m., at which time 911 was inundated with calls indicating numerous detonations in that area, located just south of Lévesque Boulevard (east), facing the Rivière des Prairies.

As soon as they arrived on the scene, officers from the Service de police de Laval (SPL) quickly spotted the vehicle riddled with projectiles, while also noticing a victim inside of it, suffering from several bullets.

Police officers attempted resuscitation maneuvers, the victim’s death being noted on the scene.

A victim’s family member, rushed to the scene, was transported to a hospital centre due to a serious nervous shock.

Developments

The SPL quickly established a security perimeter, extending notably to de l’Harmonie Street.

After taking the various witness statements, the police will investigate whether cameras in the area could have captured images that could help make advance the investigation.

As for the security perimeter, it was to be relieved around 4 p.m., yesterday.

As part of a pilot project, a team of police officer is at Saint-Maxime high school in order to interact with the students and establish a close relationship with them.

Police officers’ role in the school is to do prevention and raise awareness, with repression having no place in the targeted approach.

“Their presence responds to a need in terms of awareness, but mainly from an interrelational point of view,” said Andrée Primeau, principal of Saint-Maxime high school. “Police officers are involved with the students, establishing unique and privileged links.”

They’re discussing various topics with them, including cybercriminality, bullying, domestic violence and more.

Police officers are also trying to identify issues and concerns affecting school life.

In that sense, they’ll try to establish action or intervention plans that can help counter some of the problems.

“Mutual trust, active listening and dialogue are essential to maintain a real and lasting sense of security,” said Pierre Brochet, director of director of Laval’s police department. “It’s essential for us to strengthen the close relationship we have with the students.”

Those same police officers also inform students and school staff on topics related to the justice system and the enforcement of laws and regulations.

Positive Impacts

The goal of the project is to develop and consolidate interventions between police officers and students by increasing police’s presence in school environments.

“That pilot project is a perfect example of a collaborative and concerted initiative looking to fight against violence,” said Yves Michel Volcy, Executive Director of the Centre de services scolaire de Laval. “ will certainly have a positive impact on all students and staff.”

The implementation of that pilot project would allow any student living a difficult situation to be guided to a socio-community agent to get support.

Together, they’ll be able to find solutions, and the students will be oriented to the relevant resources.

Laval’s police department says the collaboration with the Centre de services scolaire will help students to act more effectively, and better equip themselves. (J.B.)
