The show was presented in three parts, with The Standstills and The Warning performing the first and second part of the concert, respectively.

Three Days Grace is well-known for songs like “I Hate Everything About Yout”, “Animal I Have Become”, “Never Too Late”, “Pain”, and “Break”.

The Standstills

For the band The Standstills, touring with Three Days Grace is a great opportunity to perform some songs from its new album “Shockwave”.

Singer Jonny Fox said the shows have been incredible so far.

“For us, it’s really nice to bring those songs to live on stage,” Fox said. “We’re seeing a lot of people connecting with them, which is amazing.”

The singer also added that you never really know what kind of experience you’re going to live when touring in Canada during winter.

“It’s been crazy,” he laughed. “We’ve been battling against early winter weather. However, I think it kind of makes the show a little more intense because of the storms between the performances. I’ve never seen crowds that loud before.”

Fox couldn’t point out at one favourite song from the new album. However, he laughed that the ones his band had the most fun creating were probably those that didn’t make the cut.

“Each song has a story behind it’s creation process, ” he said. “For ‘Motherlode’, we collaborated with a friend. For ‘Back To You’, that song was a last-minute thing in the studio, and it was very special that we were able to pull out something.”

While it wasn’t the first time in the province, last night’s show was The Standstills’s first in Laval.

More than 2,000 jack-o’-lanterns light up Illumi’s path as soon as you enter the site. Skeletons, bats and witches are also there to delight the hearts of young and old in this magically scary universe.

New Universes

Apart from Spooky at Illumi, the journey also presents new universes: Air Illumi where you can observe beautiful rockets and impressive planes, The Green Turn featuring green animals and plants, The Fantastic Flights highlighting cute hot air balloons and The Whacky Village where houses are upside down.

“There is not one universe that I prefer to the others,” said Normand Latourelle, creator of Cavalia Inc. and Illumi. “They are just as spectacular. Every year, the team aims to renew approximately 50 per cent of the universes in order to ensure an authentic experience for recurring visitors.”

However, the most innovative attraction of this new edition is undoubtedly The Submarine Tunnel. More immersive than ever, this journey immerses visitors in the heart of the ocean with projections and animations on a 180-degree dome. This universe uses video mapping technology and guarantees a memorable trip.

For the whole family

Every recent universe now includes structures that can be ridden by children.

In addition, The Balloon Bal allows participants to let off steam mid-course by disappearing into an interior space filled with beach balls.

“It’s important that the children have fun,” explained Latourelle. “They often have too much energy and love to let it all out during this experience. I guarantee you that the youth will sleep when they get home.”

By car or by foot, participants can experience the dazzling worlds of Illumi from Oct. 20, 2022, to Jan. 8, 2023.

The evening will be embellished with musical performances, including Cynthia Baroud, finalist on the show La Voix in 2015, and Nicola Ciccone.

Between performances, many draws are planned, as well as auctions that will take place throughout the evening in order to raise more funds.

There will also be a conference by a breast cancer survivor. She will talk about her personal journey towards healing.

More than 450 people are expected at the event.

“After two pandemic years, we’re expecting people to be willing to celebrate for a good cause, and be generous,” said Ihab Zaid, general manager of CIBC banking centres in Laval and chairman of the evening’s organizing committee.

Zaid said the goal is to raise $15,000, and he remains positive it will be achieved.

CIBC has supported this cause for many years, but it’s the first time it has its annual event in Laval.

No less than 585,000 visitors of all ages gathered in Laval to let themselves be carried away by the luminous poetry of the 19 universes that made the third edition of Illumi a resounding success. The luminous tradition established by Latourelle is more tangible than ever. Over half a million tickets were sold between Oct. 28, 2021 and Aug. 14, 2022. Illumi will have operated for 38 weeks, representing 185 breathtaking evenings. About 75 per cent of visitors were adults, and 25 per cent were children.

“In more than 40 years of career in the field of entertainment, I would never have imagined being able to create such a large-scale event that could attract such an impressive number of visitors of all ages,” Latourelle said. “The diversity of Illumi‘s audience is enriching for all of us, and I’m proud of our teams for having succeeded in imagining an activity where everyone can find what they are looking for.”

Illumi will be back in Laval for its fourth edition this fall, with many new features and original programming throughout the season. The kick-off will be given on Oct. 5, with a Halloween special. (J.L.B./IJL)
