As part of the Entente sectorielle de développement en matière d’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes (Sectoral Development Agreement on Equality between Women and Men) in Laval’s region for 2022–2024, the City is announcing a financial support of $294,000, for three projects.

“Reducing the persistent and worrying inequalities between women and men is one of Laval’s priorities,” said by press release Sandra El-Helou, municipal councillor of Souvenir-Labelle and responsible for the status of women, young people and seniors. “The sectoral agreement will enable the implementation of concrete projects, in order to help reduce discrimination and inequality related to gender.”

Three Promising Projects

The first project supported by Laval is a Month of Intersectional Gender-Based Analysis (GBA+) regional feminist activities. The project, from the Table de concertation de Laval en condition féminine, aims to highlight current or emerging initiatives using GBA+, in order to encourage the mobilization of groups and partners in the region, by holding one month of activities on that topic in 2023.

GBA+ means considering the influence as well as the needs that may differ, according to sex or gender identity in the adoption of municipal policies.

The second project, titled Femmes, violences et handicaps (Women, Violence and Disabilities), helps raise awareness of the paratransit emergency protocol, for women victims of violence and living with disabilities.

Finally, the third initiative, Laval mobilisée pour l’intégration et le maintien des femmes en emploi (Laval mobilized for the integration and maintenance of women in employment), is led by the organization Femmes en Emploi in collaboration with Dimension Travail.

It plans to offer workshops and activities to immigrant and racialized women, in order to support them in their job search efforts, while also raising awareness among employers about the obstacles those women are experiencing in the workplace.

About the Deal

The Entente sectorielle de développement en matière d’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes in Laval’s region for 2022–2024 links the Secretary for the Status of Women, and the City of Laval. It responds to the goals of the Government’s Strategy for Equality between Women and Men, and aims to support and mobilize regional actors in the deployment of an action plan to help counter inequalities from an intersectional perspective. (C.P./IJL)

For the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), the measures announced today by the government to respond to the overcrowding of health and social services facilities are nothing new. The CSN calls for in-depth changes, in order to ensure the sustainability of the network. That includes 100 per cent public services.

“Today’s announcements aren’t changing the main problems concerning labour shortage, Quebec’s delay in home support, the lack of hospital beds, the lack of places in CHSLDs, or the under -funding of some services,” said Caroline Senneville, president of the CSN.

“To strengthen access to the most important, and ensure each patient sees the right professional, we must rely on CLSCs,” she added. “Over the years, CLSDs have been butchered in their mission. That’s why we’re having those problems today. Family Medicine Groups (FMG) are private companies. They’ll never be able to offer multidisciplinary teams everywhere in the province, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Yet, that’s what must be done to reduce the pressure in the establishments.”

The CSN doesn’t believe the government’s making the right choice by entrusting even more accommodation spaces to the private sector. On the contrary, those needs will have to convince the government to create new places in public CHSLDs.

The CSN regrets the government is still pushing back the shift toward home care. The inability of public’s network to provide the necessary services undoubtedly contributes to the congestion of the system we’re currently witnessing. Also, home support services are much less expensive than long-term accommodation. The CSN also believes we must focus more on prevention and social services, particularly with regard to mental health. (J.L-B\IJL)

Urgences-Santé’s support staff is announcing a one-week strike, starting tonight.

Those 120 workers are ensuring the proper functioning of ambulance services of the Montreal Metropolitan Community (MMC), in particular the maintenance of the ambulance fleet and the medical equipment on board the vehicles.

Their last salary increase dates back more than two years, as their collective agreement expired on March 31, 2020.

“After more than two years of negotiations, no one will tell us we’re not patient,” said via press release the president of the Syndicat du personnel de soutien d’Urgences-santé (CSN), Marc Dulude. “The employer says he has no other financial leeway to offer us except impoverishment. Yet, he finds a way to hire subcontractors at very high prices to do part of our work, instead of investing in working conditions to fill positions internally. We’re tired of this lack of respect.”

“The pre-hospital sector is a chain with many links, and they’re all important,” added in the press release the president of the CSN, Caroline Senneville. “Support staff is the perfect example. After each shift, they must prepare each ambulance for the next team of paramedics. If there’s a delay there, it affects the entire chain, and it ends up having an impact on the response time of paramedics with a citizen who needs help, and on the quality of services to the population. That’s why it’s so important to adequately recognize their work.

The Fédération de la santé et des services sociaux (FSSS–CSN) represents 3,600 workers in the pre-hospital sector throughout Quebec. (B.L.)

The Service de police de Laval (SPL) welcomes Kino, its canine recruit who’s joining the ranks of the new squad Chien de soutien, in order to support victims or anyone who has been involved in a traumatic event requiring emotional, if not psychological, support.

Paired with an investigator, Kino and his police partner are part of the Sex Crimes Squad.

He may also be called upon for some police interventions, as well as during prevention events.

Strengthened Support

Moreover, the duo offers support to victims during the legal process.

Kino may be present to reassure victims who will have to go through the complaint process, and then trial if necessary, both during meetings with investigators, prosecutors and during testimony in court.

As you might expect, that whole process can last over time and lead to stress, anguish and anxiety.

“The arrival of Kino among us enhances the human and innovative approach offered to victims who deal with our Service,” assures Manon Ouellet, Associate Director of the Direction of investigations, corporate affairs and the protection of the integrity and municipal ethics of the SPL, via press release. “The use of an emotional support dog is also a great tool for facilitating communication with children. Kino’s great qualities and skills will undoubtedly contribute to the well-being of those who cross his path.”

Partnership

Welcoming a support dog within the SPL was made possible thanks to the involvement of several stakeholders and the valuable collaboration of partners, like the Club Lions de Laval and the Fondation des Lions du Canada Chiens-Guides.

Let’s remember that the creation of the Chien de soutien squad is part of the new service offer in public safety being implemented at the SPL, just like the Sex Crimes Squad, implemented to ensure better handling of complaints and support for victims.

It confronts problems like pimping, sexual assault, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors, adds the Laval police organization in its press release. (B.L.)
