Seasonal thaw

Clogged eavestroughs can cause a number of problems, from damaging the soffit and roofline to basement flooding. Ideally, you’ll clean out your eaves in late fall after the leaves have dropped and before the snow arrives. If you missed doing last season, it’s worth doing now anyway.

Your downspouts should eject water at least four feet from the foundation, and channel it away from your house. If your yard slopes towards the house, contact a landscaper to get it regraded.

Interior flooding

Inspecting your plumbing fixtures and appliances that use water should be on your annual to-do list. Check all the fittings and drainpipes for signs of corrosion or leaks.

You can also buy affordable electronic leak detectors that will set off an alarm if they come in contact with moisture. Set these up near your water tank, washing machine and dishwasher for peace of mind. There are also other smart devices now on the market that will detect and notify you of unexpected increases in water use or volume.

If you have a sump pump, you should also have a battery backup system in case the power goes out.

If you’re on a municipal sewage system, consider installing a backflow valve on your sewer pipe. This simple yet effective device will prevent sewage from entering your home if the sewers are clogged or flooded.

Overland flooding

If you live in a flood plain, near a river or other major waterway there are steps you can take to help protect your home from damage.

The first thing to do is make sure there are no cracks in your foundation. Inspect the entire perimeter from the outside, and inside if the basement is unfinished. Call in a contractor for remediation options if you do spot any gaps.

If you have below-grade windows, there are covers you can install over the window well. There are also reusable, absorbent barriers you can buy to place in front of doorways or other areas where water may get in.

Emergency prep

If you’re in an area where overland flooding is a risk, you need to be prepared for an emergency evacuation order. Make sure you have enough gas in your car to get out of the flood zone. Prepare an emergency bag with essentials including cash, your passports, insurance info and other important documents, medicine, non-perishable food, water, a flashlight and a first aid kit.

To protect yourself from any type of flooding, never store important documents or other valuables in the basement.

It was 10:21 a.m. when the baby was spotted not far from the place where his mother and four-year-old sister had themselves been extricated from the vehicle that had run aground in the water, near des Érables Street and Saint-Antoine Road, in Laval-sur-le-Lac.

It took place on Friday, October 28, shortly before 5 p.m.

Since discovering that the baby’s body was missing, the emergency services were carrying out intensive searches in the area, both on the water and on the banks.

The SQ divers finally found the baby in the water, before handing it over to firefighters from Laval’s Fire and Safety Department, to watch over the body while waiting to hand it over to paramedics, and then to a coroner in charge of the autopsy.

The Facts

Last Friday, October 28, people contacted 911 after seeing a SUV partially submerged in the Mille-Îles River.

A mother in her 30s and her two children, a four-year-old children and a one-month-old baby, were in the vehicle that was drowned in the water.

As soon as they were taken out alive of the vehicle, the mother and her girl were entrusted to Urgences-santé paramedics to be transported to a hospital.

The mother’s still hospitalized. Her condition is still considered critical, and can’t be met by the Service de police de Laval (SPL) investigators of crimes against the person of the SPL, who do not rule out a voluntary act on her part.

Boyer specifies that “in a little over two years, Laval will have high-level and unique facilities on the north shore that will serve both the needs of the community and the ambitions of the aquatic environment”.

If everything goes as planned, that infrastructure, which stands on the land north of the Cosmodome, could be inaugurated at the end of 2024.

$125M

Only bidder in the running, Quebec’s giant Pomerleau was awarded the design-build contract last winter for $108.4 million.

Taking into account the sums already invested in 2018, so before putting on hold the project, the bill increases to $125 million.

It will be remembered that on this date, four years ago, the City of Laval cancelled the call for tenders due to bids exceeding by almost 50 per cent the construction costs, then estimated at $61 million.

At the time, the municipal administration attributed this cost overrun to an overheated construction market. Then, there was the labor shortage that hit the industry, and a significant rise in the cost of raw materials, contributing to further increase the bill.

For the construction of that equipment, Laval has already received $20 million, funded equally by the two higher levels of government. Quebec and Ottawa made the announcement in June 2021.

Facilities

The aquatic complex, which keeps its initial design, will include:

• a recreational pool with 3 swimming lanes;
• a beach entrance and a large slide;
• a 52m × 25m pool with a bridge and a removable floor;
• a diving pool with 1m, 3m, 5m and 7.5m springboards and a 10m tower;
• a multifunctional training room;
• a fitness room;
• multipurpose rooms;
• fixed stands with 500 seats.

The capacity will be 875 bathers and 500 spectators, the aquatic complex being built to host provincial and national competitions.
