The first pedestrian was travelling from east to west, at 7656, des Laurentides Boulevard, which is located between Riopelle and Rémillard streets, in Auteuil. The driver was heading south when the collision occurred.

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers were attempted when help arrived, but the death of the victim was confirmed on the spot,” confirmed the Service de police de Laval (SPL) spokesperson, Stéphanie Beshara. “The victim was a 61-year-old man.”

Critical Condition

The second incident took place on Cartier Boulevard.

A 37-year-old woman was crossing Cartier Boulevard to get to that terminus of the same name. However, she was hit by a vehicle travelling east.

The SPL said the victim’s in serious condition, and that we fear for her life. The driver, in her 40s, was treated for a nervous shock.

For both cases, the SPL favours the thesis of accidental events.

The Quebec boxer is really excited for her fight. She said the week before the fight is usually her favourite part of the training camp.

“I’m feeling great,” Clavel said. “Right now, the hard work, and hard part of the training camp is done. Now, it’s just [some weight] to lose, the press conference, the public training, and finishing some little details. I feel ready.”

Clavel has already fought in front of big crowds, but will live the experience of being the main fight of the night, at home, for the first time.

“I feel proud about it,” the WBC champion said. “To see your face on posters, and know people will pay and come to see your fight, I’m proud of it. I’ve worked so hard for it all my life. Of course I’m a little bit nervous also.”

Clavel said that her preparation for the fight is a little bit different, since she’ll be fighting late in the evening. She needs to adapt her sleeping routine, and get used to be active later than usual during her days.

“For example, I trained around 8 p.m. yesterday, just to get used to be active around that time,” Clavel explained. “My training was finished at 9 p.m., which is probably the time of my fight in a couple of days.”

The event will bring together six American college teams, facing face off in a nine-game series from Nov. 25–27.

Three matches per day are scheduled between the teams of Stephen F. Austin, Quinnipiac, Montana State, UNCG, MTSU, and Hofstra.

“We invited all the NCAA teams for the event, and those are the ones that answered the call,” explained Emilio Zaga Mendez, brand manager at Evenko. “They’re sanctioned games, so they’ll directly influence the qualification of those teams for the post-season tournament.”

Indeed, it’s not only about preparatory games, like the one disputed between Duke and McGill University in this same building in 2018. The teams will thus have their best lineup on the field.

Laval’s Pick

Zaga Mendez believes Place Bell was the ideal location for the event due to the availability of the place, and the pool of basketball fans.

“We know Montreal and Laval are basketball fans,” he said. “Every year, the [Toronto] Raptors preseason games are working very well at the Bell Centre. We hope it will be a recurring event every year.”

Zaga Mendez sees the event as a “basketball clinic” for young fans of the sport, dreaming of making a career out of it.

Nancy Harold, executive director of the Association régionale de Basketball Laval, sees it the same way.

“It’s clear that it can interest our young people,” Harold assured. “What they need is to believe it’s possible. I think many parents can say basketball is a sport that can lead a young person to academic success, have discipline, team spirit and perseverance.”

Succession

Harold also believes the increase in interest in this sport could lead to the possible presence of a Laval player in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

“There’s talent here, and we believe the next Quebec NBA player is at Basketball Laval,” she said. “It’s such a rewarding sport for our young people, and it’s unfortunate that it’s not highlighted. We need more high-level basketball in Quebec.”

In total, the Association régionale de Basketball Laval plans to have around 50 young athletes from its program on site to attend the event.

Three Days Grace is well-known for songs like “I Hate Everything About Yout”, “Animal I Have Become”, “Never Too Late”, “Pain”, and “Break”.

The Standstills

For the band The Standstills, touring with Three Days Grace is a great opportunity to perform some songs from its new album “Shockwave”.

Singer Jonny Fox said the shows have been incredible so far.

“For us, it’s really nice to bring those songs to live on stage,” Fox said. “We’re seeing a lot of people connecting with them, which is amazing.”

The singer also added that you never really know what kind of experience you’re going to live when touring in Canada during winter.

“It’s been crazy,” he laughed. “We’ve been battling against early winter weather. However, I think it kind of makes the show a little more intense because of the storms between the performances. I’ve never seen crowds that loud before.”

Fox couldn’t point out at one favourite song from the new album. However, he laughed that the ones his band had the most fun creating were probably those that didn’t make the cut.

“Each song has a story behind it’s creation process, ” he said. “For ‘Motherlode’, we collaborated with a friend. For ‘Back To You’, that song was a last-minute thing in the studio, and it was very special that we were able to pull out something.”

While it wasn’t the first time in the province, last night’s show was The Standstills’s first in Laval.

Disappointment

However, many people have shared, on social media, their frustration and/or disappointment concerning the tree’s illumination time.

The event’s announcement was made rather late, according to many Laval residents. Also, some of those people are mentioning it’s only once there that they learned, thanks to the security deployed, that the lighting of the tree wasn’t scheduled until around 7:30 p.m., which they’re considering too late for young children.

Others are also claiming it was very difficult to hear the choir due to the mall’s ambient noise.

Around 11:20 p.m., a 31-year-old man died when getting shot in his immobilized vehicle, on the roadway of that that sector of Saint-François, located just south of Lévesque Boulevard (east), facing the Rivière des Prairies.

As soon as they arrived on the scene, officers from the Service de police de Laval (SPL) quickly spotted the vehicle riddled with projectiles, while also noticing a victim inside of it, suffering from several bullets.

Police officers attempted resuscitation maneuvers, the victim’s death being noted on the scene.

A victim’s family member, rushed to the scene, was transported to a hospital centre due to a serious nervous shock.

Other Details

In the hours following that other event, an SPL dog handler provided assistance, as did forensic identification specialists, in order to collect as many elements as possible to shed light on the investigation.

After taking the various witness statements, the police will investigate whether cameras in the area could have captured images that could help make advance the investigation.

In its statement, the SQ says it will work closely with the SPL in this case, the sixth homicide, and fourth firearm-related homicide to occur in Laval since the beginning of the year.

These athletes have received their access for the competition through their provincial ranking and qualifying events.

For the first two editions presented in Laval, this event was selected as the Canadian tournament of the year. According to Laurent Denis, general manager of Carrefour Multisports, the reduction of constraints related to the pandemic should allow them to win this distinction again in 2022.

“It’s way easier this year in terms of preparing the event,” Denis said. “We weren’t worried, and the mask requirements have dropped, so it’s really easier for us. The same can also be said for transport.”

Professional Atmosphere

Three members of the Club Tomahawk will play the tournament. This is a first for the organizers, who intend to offer them the privilege of playing on the main field of the centre multisports. The same goes for all participating Laval residents.

“We really want all participants to live a unique experience,” Denis said. “They have privileged access, are staying in hotels, and will feel like professionals throughout the week.”

The red clay surface at Carrefour Multisports, similar to that of Roland-Garros, also enhances the experience of the young players.

For the occasion, the 161 athletes, 41 coaches and companions, as well as the seven missionaries of Laval’s region met with Mayor of Laval Stéphane Boyer, and President of Sports Laval Geneviève Cossette.

“I just want to congratulate you on getting to where you are today,” Boyer said during the region’s meeting. I’m sure you are as excited as we are to be at the Jeux du Québec. […] We’re counting on you to make us shine. We want to show the other regions that we’re the best.”

“You can really be proud of that journey you’ve accomplished,” Cossette added. “As a mother of two girls practicing sports at the pre-national level, I know how much time you’re putting into training. […] For some athletes, it’s just the start of an amazing career. For others, it’s an unforgettable experience during which you’ll meet new people, create new links. Live it to the fullest.”

Cossette also took a moment to recognize the work of the parents, who get involved in helping their children participate in various sports competitions.

Ambassador

Gymnast Félix Dolci could not be at the region’s meeting. However, he still shared a message to the young athletes in a pre-recorded video.

“I’d like to congratulate you all for having surpassed yourselves throughout the year in order to be here today, and play the Jeux du Québec,” Dolci said.

Let’s remember that Dolci is the most decorated athlete in the history of the Jeux du Québec, but also Canada Winter Games. He participated twice in each of these competitions, winning a total of 18 medals.

Preparation and COVID-19

The rest of the evening was to prepare Laval’s athletes for the provincial competition, which will begin on Friday, July 22.

They’ve been informed on how to proceed when arriving on the site, and how their schedule works when it comes to mealtimes and bedtime.

Athletes will have to be tested five days before the start of their competition block, as well as the day before the competition.

They’ll also have to do a daily rapid test. If an athlete eventually tests positive for COVID-19, he will then be placed in isolation, before leaving the site facilities with a family member.
