Canadians have certain rights when it comes to dealing with banks, and opening a bank account is one of them. You can open a bank account at any federally regulated bank even if you don’t have a job or don’t have money to put in the account right away.

The bank must, however, be able to confirm your identity through proper identification. If you’re not a Canadian citizen, you may still be able to open a bank account with the proper identification.

But banks do have the right to refuse to open an account in certain situations. For example, if they can’t verify the validity of identification, or they have reasonable grounds to believe that the account will be used in committing fraud or other illegal actions.

When you open an account, the bank must provide you with information about existing fees, any fee increases and new fees. When a bank increases a fee after you’ve opened an account, they must give you written information about the change. If you were not made aware of the change before it came into effect, you can make a complaint. You can also contact the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada to learn more about your rights.

Banks must also send electronic alerts when the balance of your chequing or savings account falls below a certain amount. The default amount is $100 dollars but you can choose a different number. These alerts may help you manage your day-to-day finances and avoid overdraft penalties. Your bank will send these alerts to you automatically and you may opt out at any time.

Find more information about banking rights at canada.ca/money.

Here are tips to help you make the most of summer without breaking the bank during this time of high costs and high interest rates:

Make a summer budget

Prepare a budget in advance for the activities you want to do over the summer. That way you can set limits on your spending, identify ways to reduce costs and focus on what you really want – and what you can really afford – to do.

A free online tool to help you start is the budget planner from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. The smartphone-friendly tool is designed to help people start and maintain a budget. lt uses insights into how people make financial decisions to create an interactive experience personalized to your needs.

Indulge in day trips

Travelling can get expensive, but you might not need to go far for some fun. Check out local travel guides to know what’s happening in your region and to get information about parks and festivals near you. Pack a simple picnic and make a day of it whether you go to the local pool or a local park. We are fortunate to have national and provincial parks in every province and territory in Canada. Spending time outside in nature can be a great and inexpensive way to relax and recharge our batteries.

Plan ahead to cut down costs

If you decide to go on a trip, consider ways to make it more affordable. Air travel can add up, so road trips might be a better option this year. You may wish to check out places off the beaten path since they can be cheaper. Research and compare restaurant and accommodation options in advance to help you stay within your budget.

Find more money tips at canada.ca/money.

A few weeks ago, Revenu Québec announced that the distribution of one-time amounts paid by the provincial government to deal with the rise in the inflation rate would begin by the beginning of this month.

In the end, more than 6.5 million taxpayers will have access to that financial assistance.

The amount will be $600 for those whose individual income doesn’t exceed $50,000. It will gradually decrease, down to $400 for those with an income slightly above $50,000.

Revenu Québec

Although Revenu Québec specifies that people don’t have anything to do in order to receive that financial assistance, many have still haven’t received the money, and are wondering.

For example, is it normal that all the members of my family, all having the same last name, have already obtained their cheque, but not me? Why did my friends already receive their check two weeks ago, but I’m still without answer?

First, it’s important to know that taxpayers who are yet to file their 2021 income tax return have until June 30, 2023 to do so in order to take advantage of that new measure to counter inflation.

People who received last-resort financial assistance on Dec. 31, 2021, and benefit from the automatic payment of the TQS component of the solidarity tax credit, don’t have to file an income tax return to be eligible for the cheque.

Payment Date

Something important to know is that you can find the date you should receive your cheque on Revenu Québec’s website, on Mon Dossier. Also, the amount of the cheque’s also indicated there, if you have any doubts about it.

So, in case of uncertainties, just look there, and you’ll see everything you need to know.

The money raised during that day will be donated to the Centre de bénévolat et moisson Laval (CBML) and the Société St-Vincent-de-Paul.

Observed Increase

In addition, nearly $50,000 was raised during the street drive of that 22nd edition. It represents an 18 per cent increase from last year’s drive.

Provincially, more than $2.8 million was raised on the same day. Laval ranked ninth among the regions having raised the largest amount. (N.P.)

Revenu Québec announced that the distribution of cheques by the provincial government, to deal with the rise in the inflation rate, will begin by the beginning of this month.

That financial assistance will be given to more than 6.5 million taxpayers.

The amount will be $600 for people whose individual income does not exceed $50,000. It will gradually decrease for those with an income slightly above $50,000.

It will be $400 for the $54,000 to $100,000 range. Again, there will be a distribution, which will be gradually reduced to $104,000.

That amount will be adjusted, according to income for 2021. Also, it must be noted that it’s non-taxable, and will be remitted by direct deposit, or cheque by the end of 2022.

Revenu Québec specifies that citizens don’t have to do anything in order to receive the money.

The Centre de bénévolat et moisson Laval (CBML) is launching its 38th Christmas basket campaign, which will be held from Nov. 14 to Dec. 21 in Laval.

The organization is calling for the generosity and solidarity of the Laval business community, as well as the the population during this holiday season, which promises to be difficult for many.

Having experienced a record increase in requests for food aid over the past year, the CBML has no choice, but to increase its number of Christmas baskets. Thus, the organization will distribute 200 more baskets than in previous years, bringing the number to 2,500.

“Since the beginning of October, in addition to the daily requests for food aid, people have been contacting us to make sure they’re having their Christmas basket,” said by press release José Haeck, head of the emergency food aid counter at Moisson Laval. “The requests are exploding, and the phone keeps ringing.”

“The general increase in the cost of living has caused an unprecedented increase in our requests for food aid,” added in the same press release Jean Gagnon, general manager of the CBML. “Facing this societal issue, we have decided to help as many Laval residents as possible, and distribute 200 additional Christmas baskets.”

This year, in addition to the 2,500 Christmas baskets to fill with food, the organization has set itself the goal of raising $350,000 in monetary donations. That expected amount of money will help the organization in its operations surrounding their annual campaign.

Until the end of December, the population, businesses and all public institutions in Laval are invited to take part in this major food drive, which will be used to feed 2,500 families. The distribution of Christmas baskets will take place from Dec. 18–20, at the CBML, assisted by 250 volunteers. (A.B.)

Starting at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, the Embassy Plaza will host a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The evening will be embellished with musical performances, including Cynthia Baroud, finalist on the show La Voix in 2015, and Nicola Ciccone.

Between performances, many draws are planned, as well as auctions that will take place throughout the evening in order to raise more funds.

There will also be a conference by a breast cancer survivor. She will talk about her personal journey towards healing.

More than 450 people are expected at the event.

“After two pandemic years, we’re expecting people to be willing to celebrate for a good cause, and be generous,” said Ihab Zaid, general manager of CIBC banking centres in Laval and chairman of the evening’s organizing committee.

Zaid said the goal is to raise $15,000, and he remains positive it will be achieved.

CIBC has supported this cause for many years, but it’s the first time it has its annual event in Laval.

The labour shortage is hitting Quebec businesses hard, costing them nearly $10.7 billion, reveals the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) in its new research note.

“We knew the labour shortage had a very negative impact on leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),” said by press release François Vincent, vice-president for Quebec at the CFIB. “They have to work more hours, and their employees as well. They’re forced to refuse contracts and business opportunities.”

Vincent adds that those SMEs could have benefited from these sums to recover, grow and revitalize their regions. For him, the labour shortage issue is very bad news for SME leaders.

CFIB’s assessment is based on data from a survey conducted last March. The results relating to the losses suffered by SMEs were calculated using the average total income of a Quebec SME, published by Statistics Canada for the year 2020, by sector of activity. Let’s note that the analysis only takes into account SMEs with revenues between $30,000 and $5 million, in order to have a conservative assessment.

All Sectors

In a report published last April, the CFIB revealed how the labour shortage was affecting all industries, and leading to an explosion of job vacancies, thus putting a lot of pressure on SMEs.

Today’s research note also highlights the economic impacts by activity sector.

The construction and professional and administrative services sectors are registering losses of more than $2 billion. SMEs in the lodging/food and retail sectors are experiencing losses of nearly a billion. In the wholesale trade and transportation sectors, these losses total $1.2 billion.

Measures

The lack of employees is cited by 86 per cent of small business owners in Quebec as the most difficult issue to overcome in 2022, just behind the increase in costs, mentioned by 87 per cent of them.

“The Government of Quebec has adopted several measures to support companies seeking employees, and has just made changes so that all SMEs have access to tax credits to attract workers,” explained Vincent in the press release. “That said, more actions are possible and necessary to help those businesses, especially in terms of taxation, where Quebec is the country’s champion.” (A.B.)

Opération Enfant Soleil has given $23,984 to the Hôpital de la Cité-de-la-Santé, of the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) of Laval.

That money will allow the hospital to obtain three vital signs monitors, and a ventilation device to safely resuscitate newborns

This sum will make it possible to obtain three vital signs monitors and a ventilation device to resuscitate newborns in complete safety.

The donation will also help the Cité-de-la-Santé to get three laryngoscopes with cameras and blades of different sizes for neonatal and pediatric patients, as those facilitate rapid intubation for small patients. Other equipment is also part of the purchases the hospital will be able to afford with the donation.

Opération Enfant Soleil has donated $825,172 to the Hôpital de la Cité-de-la-Santé over the years.

“The equipment provided by Opération Enfant Soleil helps us a lot, and gives us a choice of material that is more sofisticated,” said pediatric nurse from the place, Pascale Simard, via press release. “It allows us to keep our babies here, in our regional centre, instead of transferring them to centres in Montreal, Quebec or other cities.”

In total, 116 donations will be made to organizations and hospitals across the province this year.

They’ll help to realize various project related to the prevention of disease in young people through physical activity and healthy lifestyles, to offer the best medical care to children, to support medical teams and to support families when they need it most. (N.P.)
