As of October 22, three new area codes will be introduced in Quebec.
That includes the implementation of the area code 354 in Laval, and all areas currently served by area codes 450 and 579. Area code 263 will be added to 514 and 438 in the Montreal region, while areas using 819 and 873 will soon see the appearance of 468.
The implementation of these new area codes is the result of decisions by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), and will help meet the growing demand for new phone numbers.
“The introduction of a new area code makes it possible to provide millions of additional phone numbers, and that, without affecting the existing ones,” said via press release Lucie Papineau-Pugliese, spokesperson for Telecommunications Alliance, in a press release. “The new codes will coexist with the codes currently in service in the targeted regions in Quebec.”
From the moment the new area codes 263, 354 and 468 come into effect, consumers and businesses requiring a new phone service could be assigned a number with the new code.
The implementation of a new area code will not result in any change concerning how to dial long distance calls, or how special numbers, such as 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911, are dialed.
The local communications sector of the concerned regions also remains the same. (N.P.)
